  • The Housing Development Corporation of Lancaster is using a Rural LISC State Farm grant for Service Learning* at the McCaskey East School. Students Evelyn Forney and Jaime Baez and their teacher Carol Lee Pyfer wrote personal letters to representatives from State Farm to express their gratitude.  Here are some notable quotes:

Evelyn Forney: “I feel now that I not only want to make a difference but I have to make a difference because the more that we work together the more we can change the world.”

Jaime Baez: “This service learning project has also changed my attitude towards affordable housing and homelessness.  I have seen hidden homeless, homeless in shelters and on the streets.  I can now say that it is impossible tell if someone is homeless just by how they look.”

Carol Lee Pyfer: “The service learning requirement involved in our curriculum called Champions of Caring provided the perfect opportunity to promote community activity, but motivation and direction was still lacking.  Thankfully, HDC came along and solved those problems.  We now had objectives, purposes, and deadlines, which drive the classroom.”
