Tierra del Sol was organized in 1974 by a group of rural residents, farm workers, a minister and a county commissioner. Its mission is to improve the living conditions of low-income people by providing them with affordable housing and community development. Through the years, TdS has become an instrument of change for many communities and neighborhoods that are underserved. Tierra del Sol works with individuals, groups and public officials to provide services in housing development, advocacy, community organizing, technical assistance and training. TdS has successfully assured that improvements are sustained over time. It is incorporated to do business in New Mexico, Texas and Arizona and has a strong presence along the U.S.-Mexico border. It devotes special attention to farm workers, displaced workers, single parent families, the elderly, people with disabilities and residents of several Congressionally designated colonias along the border. TdS is designated as a Community Housing Development Organization (CHDO) in the State of New Mexico as well as in the City of Las Cruces.

Tierra del Sol is an experienced CDC with a strong production track record. It has completed more than 3,000 units of affordable housing. TdS has been involved in several housing initiatives, such as rural and urban self-help housing, rental housing development and property management, repair and rehabilitation of owner-occupied housing, homebuyers' education, credit counseling, homeownership training and default prevention, neighborhood planning, and water, sewer and community infrastructure development. TdS has developed more than 700 units of self-help, single family homeownership housing, rehabilitated more than 250 units of owner occupied housing, developed 566 affordable rental units in 15 apartment complexes for special populations, and manages 355 affordable apartments. Additionally, TdS provides homeownership counseling as a compliment to its self-help housing program.
