Since Hurricanes Katrina and Rita tour through Southern Louisiana in 2005, an area once lush with seafood, sugarcane, rice, pepper sauce, and annual festivals has been struggling to recover from the devastation. From the very first days after Katrina, Southern Mutual Help Association (SMHA) has spearheaded the efforts of the Rural Recovery Task Force. The stated goal of the task force is to "rebuild Louisiana better than it was before." To date almost 4,500 volunteers have helped nearly 950 people and communities to recover from the damages.
