HISTORY

Southeast Alabama Self-Help Association (SEASHA), incorporated in 1967, is one of the nation's first community development corporations. It grew out of the Civil Rights Movement-related Tuskegee Institute Educational Program, a tutorial initiative involving hundreds of Tuskegee students. The organization’s mission remains: "To eliminate the paradox of poverty in the midst of plenty ... and to join with other areas of Alabama and the Nation in a concerted effort to eliminate poverty by opening to everyone the opportunity for education and training, the opportunity to work, and the opportunity to live in decency and integrity."

In its more than 35 year history, SEASHA has embraced a multifaceted approach to community development and resident empowerment. The organization's strategy combines social services with housing and economic development. SEASHA was one of the first rural community groups designated by the State of Alabama as a Community Development Housing Organization (CHDO), and the first to develop affordable apartments using financing from federal Low Income Housing Tax Credits.
