STRATEGIES & ACCOMPLISHMENTS

Affordable Homes Development
Rural Opportunities, Inc. of Pennsylvania (ROI PA) expands housing choices for rural families, farm workers, homeless single parents, senior citizens, and people with disabilities. It develops and rehabilitates single-family homes and apartments. The organization provides homeownership counseling and access to loans to help low- and moderate-income families become homeowners. In 1999, ROI PA helped more than 400 families move to better homes. In addition, it provides technical assistance and training to other nonprofit organizations developing affordable housing.

Education and Job Training and Placement
ROI PA trains adults and youth in the skills they need to secure jobs that pay livable wages, and provides placement services to people moving from welfare to work. In 1999, more than 1,300 people enrolled in the job training and welfare-to-work programs. Participants increased their average annual earnings from $5,252 to $15,907.

Child Development
ROI PA operates both Migrant Head Start and day care programs, preparing children for school. In 1999, more than 140 children attended ROI Head Start programs.

Emergency and Supportive Services
ROI PA provides case management services, emergency rental and energy assistance, and runs food pantries throughout its service area. In 1999, it provided nearly 800 people with these services.

Health and Safety Services
ROI PA also works to improve the health and well being of its constituents through education, prevention, and intervention services. In the last year, it has addressed the needs of over 2,300 people affected by pesticide, workplace safety, domestic violence, and maternal and child health issues.
