STRATEGIES & ACCOMPLISHMENTS

EVERGLADES VILLIAGE:
Rural Neighborhoods has emerged as the nation’s largest nonprofit developer of migrant and seasonal farmworker rental housing. Phase One of Everglades Village, completed in 1996-1997, is a successful $21,614,988 rural neighborhood. It consists of 239 single-family and duplex units, child care center, community health clinic, community center and management office. More than 85% of Everglades Village residents are below 50% of the area median income demonstrating the project’s effectiveness in serving the neediest households in the area. Phase Two of Everglades Village was completed in 2002 at a cost of $16,742,601 leveraged in project financing. It consists of 161 residential townhouses, duplexes and single-family units, an additional child care facility, a 10-acre public park and neighborhood retail center. In 2000, Rural Neighborhoods moved north to other rural communities in Florida. To date, it has completed Main Street Village, a 79-unit rental project in Immokalee, Live Oak Villas, a 104-unit community in Ft. Pierce, and Manatee Village, consisting of 62 apartments and a 128-bed SRO in Ruskin.

In addition to developing rental housing, RNI and its staff are active in community economic development. Its projects include real estate development of the historic Cuchille House and adaptive reuse as social service offices together with the construction and ownership of three child care centers and 10,000 sq. ft. in neighborhood retail.
