Northwest Montana Human Resources, Inc. was founded in 1976 with the overall mission to provide opportunities for disadvantaged citizens to become more self-sufficient. NMHR has grown over the years, and now has a staff of 64 full-time employees. The main office is in Kalispell (Flathead County), with satellite offices in Polson (Lake County) and in Libby (Lincoln County). The Lake and Lincoln satellite offices assist the main office in providing services to Sanders County.
NMHR is unique in their service area because of the following factors:
- NMHR is a private, nonprofit organization with the ability to pursue federal, state, private and local funding resources. This allows the flexibility to focus efforts and maximize resources to benefit the changing needs in the communities.
- NMHR is community-based, and focuses its efforts on community partnerships promoting individual, family and community self-sufficiency. It targets hard-to-serve individuals by focusing on networking available resources and services, which promote long-term solutions for individuals to become self-sufficient. Using a holistic approach to clients’ needs, NMHR addresses not only housing needs, but also budgeting, medical, job training and education. Resources are marshaled to meet these needs, eventually leading to independence.
NMHR serves a large geographic area, 13,375 square miles, with a total population of approximately 132,300. Flathead, Lake, Lincoln and Sanders are rural counties, with limited employment opportunities and low wages. NMHR is the only organization in the four-county area providing a wide variety of services to promote self-sufficiency and independence. Programs include: In-Home Services including Case Management Resources, Personal Touch Home Care, Area Agency on Aging; Economic Development including Northwest Business Center, Business Loans, Business Technical Assistance, Government Contracts; Employment and Training: Workforce Investment Act, Adult and Youth, Displaced Homemakers, Work Readiness Component, Emergency Shelter; Energy: Low Income Energy Assistance Program, Weatherization Assistance, Energy Conservation and Energy Share Montana; Housing: Rental Assistance, HUD Certified Housing Advice, Apartments, Senior Home Rehabilitation and Mutual Self-Help Housing.
