Originally established in 1985 as the Northern Economic Initiatives Center at Northern Michigan University, Northern Initiatives became a private, nonprofit corporation in 1992. In addition to its continued partnership with Northern Michigan University, Northern Initiatives is affiliated with Shorebank Corporation of Chicago and with Shorebank BIDCO Inc., a for-profit lending institution and Shorebank Subsidiary.

Northern Initiatives is an enterprise development organization that works to strengthen the competitive position of the Upper Peninsula economy by supporting entrepreneurial growth in the region. It lends money, trains, and consults with individuals and businesses in an effort to advance Michigan's Upper Peninsula as a vital, attractive place to live, work, do business, and raise a family. It assists entrepreneurs in developing systems, strategies, and products that will enable them to compete on a global level, in turn making it possible for employers to pay wages that will support their workers’ families.
