SUCCESS STORY

Mrs. Elsa Ayala heard of NHSDC through a friend, just when she was considering acquiring a local day care center. Mrs. Ayala, who has worked with several school districts as teacher, parent coordinator, program coordinator, and administrator, wanted to use her ideas and experiences to improve the center. NHSDC provided her with the opportunity to realize her dream.

She applied for a small business loan. Within four months her loan was approved. NHSDC was involved fully with the project, providing not only the loan itself, but technical assistance, budget counseling, management advising, and help with management systems. Mrs. Ayala became the proud owner of the Mother Goose Day Care Center in Uvalde.

She painted the interior and exterior of the building with bright colors, purchased new toys, created a web page so parents could check in on their children, extended the hours of operation, organized a parent committee, and provided transportation.

Mother Goose Day Care currently has a full enrollment of 72 children, and a staff of 12 to care for the children. “Mother Goose Day Care Center has developed into a very successful venture,” said Maria Martinez, NHSDC Small Business Loan Officer.

Mother Goose Day Care Center has helped more than just one person’s dreams come true; it creates employment, helps parents find and keep jobs, and provides a needed service to the community.

“I never dreamed I’d have something like this in my life,” Mrs. Ayala said. “I am very fortunate to be able to do something I love – care for children.”
