HISTORY

Neighborhood Housing Services of Dimmit County (NHSDC), founded by Manual Estrada, Jr. in 1986, to combat economic, social and housing deterioration. It expanded its Dimmit County services to include eight contiguous counties and established a revolving loan fund to help people renovate or purchase homes, and build new homes for sale to low-income families. NHSDC has partnerships with lenders, government entities, nonprofit intermediaries and other nonprofit providers to provide home ownership opportunities for families who might not qualify for or do not know how to get conventional mortgages. It added a small business lending program in 1999 and by the end of the year, the Intermediary Relending Program had loaned more than $1 million to small businesses in their service area. In 2002, NHSDC began development of a hydroponic greenhouse project on 245 acres with a grant fro the Office of Community Affairs. NHSDC has been designated a Community Housing Development Organization (CHDO) and is a member of the Neighborhood Reinvestment Corporation’s National NeighborWorks ® Network.
