West Central Pennsylvania is a beautiful and scenic part of the country with mountains, waterfalls, and distinct, vibrant seasons. Cambria County is home of the first railway tunnel in the United States and the first priest trained and ordained in America, Prince Gallitzin. It is also the second largest potato producer in Pennsylvania. Clearfield County was created in 1804 and named for Clearfield Creek, which in turn was named for the "clear-fields" made by the area's large number of bison. Indiana County is the Christmas Tree Capital of the World, and home to the Indiana University of Pennsylvania; while in Smicksburg the Amish continue their traditional ways.

West Central Pennsylvania once helped make Pennsylvania a national industrial leader. For nearly a century, the area's economy was based on steel production and coal mining. During the 1970s and 1980s, though, the closing of both industries devastated the area. More than 15,000 jobs that generated payrolls in excess of $75 million were lost. Unemployment rates skyrocketed as families' incomes plummeted. Today, nearly 14 percent of the residents in Cambria, Clearfield, and Indiana counties live in poverty.
