SUCCESS STORY

As the result of a difficult divorce, Sue and her two children became homeless. The family became LACLT tenants in l999. Sue consistently worked two jobs, one full-time as a first grade teacher and another part-time as a waitress. She did not rely on state or federal aid of any kind. She took advantage of LACLT’s supportive services counseling and budgeting assistance. She utilized a number of parenting workshops brought to her attention by LACLT’s resident services director. She often mentored other young mothers who were new to the program and in need of a little support. As much as Sue loved her apartment and the neighborhood in which she lived, it was her dream to own her own home. When LACLT opened its HomeBuyer Resource Center, Sue was one of the first to come on board and open an IDA savings account. She attended all the required workshops and seminars and participated in individual counseling sessions. In the fall of 2003, Sue and her family were thrilled to purchase their own home.
