HISTORY

In 1989, the late Catholic Bishop Frank Murphy, Lutheran Bishop Morris Zumbrun, and The Enterprise Foundation, met with Western Maryland's religious leaders to discuss area needs. They identified affordable housing as a critical challenge. Some 35,000 households suffer from some type of housing problem; 12,000 lack indoor plumbing, electricity, and access to safe water.

The outcome of this meeting was Interfaith Housing of Western Maryland (Interfaith Housing). In 1992, Interfaith Housing received its first major grant and began building its first development: 11 single-family homes for sale to low-income families. In 1994, the organization completed its first rental complex for low-income seniors and in 1995 added homeownership and self-help housing programs. In 1998, Interfaith Housing expanded its efforts to include a domestic violence shelter in Washington County.
