Gallatin, Park, and Meagher counties have a combined population of 78,800. Each encompasses approximately 2,500 square miles of mountainous terrain located on the eastern slope of the Rocky Mountains. The area is bordered on the west by the Missouri River headwaters, to the south by Yellowstone National Park, and to the north by the valleys of the Missouri and Yellowstone Rivers. Historically, the area's economy has been based on farming, ranching, and the extraction and processing of natural resources. Over the past 20 years, however, there has been a significant shift to tourism and related services.
