SUCCESS STORY

For 18 years Ken Kauffman lived in a cold two bay garage, sleeping on a portable cot and cooking with a toaster oven. Known by some as "Zeek," he was homeless, unemployed, and didn't have any income to rent an apartment. Friends of Zeek provided the modest shelter he called "home."

In 1997, when Zeek was 66 years old, the garage's owners suggested that Zeek find permanent housing. With their urging and some guidance, Zeek applied to Saint Peter Apartments in Columbia, managed by Housing Development Corporation. Saint Peter is a subsidized property for residents 62 years and older, where tenant rents are pegged at 30% of income.

Today, Zeek lives comfortably in a one-bedroom apartment. He is on a fixed income from Social Security, and he enjoys the privacy, comfort, and security of Saint Peter. In addition to having safe, affordable housing, Zeek now feels better about himself. He takes pride in his apartment and enjoys talking and socializing with other residents. Zeek is happy to live at Saint Peter's and recommends it as a wonderful place to live. Zeek has stabilized his life and says he only wishes he had moved to Saint Peter sooner.
