STRATEGIES & ACCOMPLISHMENTS
Affordable Homes
Housing Development Corporation (HDC) acquires vacant
land to build new apartments and renovates existing
buildings to develop affordable rental housing for
families and senior citizens. A number of its
developments have won design awards. Its senior
communities are specifically designed to enable
residents to continue to live independently as long as
possible. Since 1971, HDC has completed more than 2,500
homes. HDC also provides technical assistance and
consulting services to less-experienced nonprofit
organizations.
Another
HDC development, Franklin Apartments used to be a
cigar-rolling factory. Now, the building is home to a
mixed-income rental housing community for people age 62
and older. Some of the apartments were developed using
federal Low Income Housing Tax Credits, while the rest
rent at market rates. More than 1,200 people toured the
building when it opened in April 1990.
The
Apartments at Mulberry Corners is housed in the old Raub
Supply Building, a vacant landmark formerly occupied by
a plumbing supply business. Redeveloping the building
produced 25 one- and two-bedroom apartments,
professional office space, and space for the North
Charlotte Street Mennonite Church.
Property
Management
HDC provides property management services for its own
properties and other property owners. It currently
manages more than 2,400 apartments.
Supportive
Services
HDC tailors the services available at its rental
communities to resident needs. In a family development,
for example, it offers links and referrals to job
training and placement programs, affordable childcare,
and financial counseling. For senior communities, HDC
facilitates health-related workshops, health screenings,
flu shots, blood pressure checks, and transportation to
shopping centers and health services. |
