South Central Pennsylvania is a land of contrasts. It has the Appalachian Trail and Susquehanna River; Hershey Park; huge sprawling discount malls; and the state capital, Harrisburg. It is the center of Pennsylvania Dutch Country, where the Amish live.

Here are peaceful fields, beautiful barns, one-room schoolhouses, and wooden covered bridges. Farm machinery is pulled behind four-and six-mule teams. Residents still make their clothing and prized quilts. But it is also one of the most severely "malled" places in America.

The region's economy relies on farming, industry, retail facilities, and tourism.
