West Virginia is in Appalachia. It is known as The Mountain State. It broke away from the Commonwealth of Virginia during the American Civil War and was admitted to the Union as a separate state on June 20, 1863, an anniversary now celebrated as West Virginia Day. It is the only state formed as a direct result of the Civil War.

Elkins is the county seat in Randolph County, the largest county in the northeast quadrant of the state. The community was incorporated in 1890 and named in honor of Stephen Benton Elkins (1841-1911), the United States Senator from West Virginia. The population was 7,032 at the 2000 Census, the 2005 Census estimate shows 7,109 residents.
