HISTORY

The Garrett County Community Action Committee, Inc. (GCCAC), incorporated in 1966, serves Garrett County, Maryland, which is located in the central region of the Appalachian Mountains. Its mission is to help people improve the quality of their lives by becoming self-sufficient. Overall, GCCAC is directly involved with 30 percent of the 30,000 residents of Garrett County through its many programs and activities.

GCCAC administers a variety of service programs targeted toward the low-income and elderly. The organization is the focal point for local anti-poverty planning and programming. It is also a developer of community and commercial facilities, as well as affordable rental and ownership housing.

Early on, GCCAC was awarded an economic development grant from the federal government it used to create and spin off the County Economic Development Corporation.
