HISTORY

Local community leaders from county government and private industry founded Fayette County Community Action Agency (FCCAA) in 1966 to help residents lift themselves out of poverty.

During the late 1960s, FCCAA started job training, Head Start, day care, education, and legal services programs for low-income residents. In the 1970s, it added senior services including a Senior Center and Meals-on-Wheels, and food and nutrition programs such as consumer co-ops and the Women, Infants, and Children program.

During the 1980s, FCCAA started literacy, adult basic education, and energy bill assistance programs. Responding to welfare reform in the 1990s, FCCAA introduced new education and training programs. It established a comprehensive primary health care center in 1997.

Both on its own and in collaboration with Community Action Southwest (a separate community action program in Greene and Washington counties), FCCAA has created four affiliate corporations to implement its comprehensive strategy to create affordable housing, support local businesses, and provide job training and social services needed to develop and maintain healthy communities.
