On February 21, 1971, a tornado leveled the small town of Inverness in the Mississippi Delta, killing 21 people and leaving hundred without homes. These homeless families were forced to live in temporary shelters. In response to this problem the residents of Sunflower county formed the Delta Housing Development Corporation. Delta Housing immediately began construction on a dozen houses for the storm victims.
