SUCCESS STORY

Jose and Bertha Gonzalez, a couple with four young children, dreamed of owning their own home. For 10 years, they received rental assistance through the U.S. HUD Section 8 program. Mr. Gonzalez was a farm worker, earning only $9,000 a year. Mrs. Gonzalez stayed at home caring for the children.

After applying to several financial institutions and programs for a mortgage and getting nowhere, they contacted Comite de Bien Estar (Comite). Comite worked with the family. When it was discovered someone had been illegally using Mrs. Gonzalez's social security number and she now had bad credit, Comite helped address the problem. It disputed her credit report, made phone calls, wrote letters, and talked with creditors for several months. In the end, all their credit issues were resolved. Comite was able to offer the family a no-interest, forgivable loan of $35,800 to serve as gap financing, augmenting a conventional mortgage on a four-bedroom home. The Gonzalez family has their very own home.
