CMCA’s purpose is to stimulate a more effective concentration of resources to enable low-income families and individuals to obtain the skills, knowledge, and motivation needed to become self-sufficient. CMCA acts as a multipurpose umbrella agency constantly working to alleviate the conditions of poverty through a range of government funded programs, including Head Start, Family Resource Program, Foster Grandparent Program, Housing Programs, and Emergency Energy Programs. In order to advance its housing programs, CMCA obtained designation as a CHDO (Community Housing Development Organization) from the Missouri Housing Development Commission and the city of Columbia.
In 2007, CMCA created a partnership to obtain additional funding for housing and community development. CMCA is working on affordable housing development in Fulton, Vandalia, Centralia, Boonville and sever smaller cities in the service area. CMCA is developing partnerships similar to those in Fulton – with the local government and other non-profit organizations. CMCA is identifying properties that need to be demolished and rebuilt or properties that can be affordably rehabilitated, as well as property suitable and available for multi-family development. CMCA goals for development in 2007 include 10-15 single family homes and approximately 50 multi-family units in 1-3 separate developments. CMCA will also prepare another 50 families for home ownership.
