STRATEGIES & ACCOMPLISHMENTS

Affordable Homes and Homeownership
Since its inception in 1990, CHI has developed 37 ownership homes and 98 rental apartments. It is currently finishing a new 17-home subdivision. It also manages 212 rental homes in seven communities. CHI also originates loans for the state housing finance agency, the Kentucky Housing Corporation.

CHI helps low-income families become first-time homeowners by providing budget and homeownership counseling, classes on home maintenance, construction management, energy conservation, and loan packaging.

Community Development
CHI uses its housing development activities to help achieve the broader goal of revitalizing local communities. Its Renaissance Apartments, with 30 rental homes and six commercial spaces, is a good example. CHI developed this project in Irvine, a town of 4,800 in Estill County, by rehabilitating three deteriorated historic buildings on Main Street. These buildings were an eyesore and a constant reminder of the town’s economic decline. Developing these apartments strengthened the downtown market for good and services, and developing the ground floor for retail shops, including a CPA’s office, an art and music studio, and a deli, spurred economic activity downtown.
