CATCH was founded to create affordable housing using the land trust model to empower low-income tenants to be involved in the solution to their own housing needs. CATCH creates affordable places to live by acquiring, renovating, and building housing. The organization currently owns 194 units. CATCH accomplishes the second part of its mission by involving residents as volunteers in the governance of CATCH, and offering a range of housing options: rental, ownership and/or housing with supportive services to help people retain their independence.

The NH Charitable Foundation has identified the state’s affordable housing crisis as an area for shared work and has established the Workforce Housing Council (WHC) and Regional Workforce Housing Coalitions. The goal of this initiative is to build an effective and sustainable housing advocacy infrastructure in New Hampshire. CATCH is a member of this Coalition and was successful in lobbying the City of Concord to form a Municipal Housing Commission, which was approved by the City Council in February of 2007.

Merrimack County and the rest of New Hampshire are experiencing record highs in foreclosure rates due to resetting subprime mortgages. A study for the New Hampshire Bankers Association predicts that 1,800 homeowners in the state will face foreclosure this year, and the number will rise next year to 2,000 or more. By contrast, there were roughly 150 foreclosures in New Hampshire last year. CATCH is working diligently with the State Banking Commissioner and local banks to address the rising foreclosure rate in the community.
