HISTORY

In 1994, a group of concerned social workers, mushroom growers, members of the clergy, and public officials met to address Southern Chester County's affordable housing shortage. The situation was particularly dire for farm workers and their families. They decided to form a nonprofit housing organization to address these needs.

The Alliance for Better Housing (ABH) was spun off from La Comunidad Hispana, a 25-year-old human service agency. ABH primarily serves Mexican and Puerto Rican immigrants, many of who started in the fields and have gone on to other blue-collar jobs, including landscaping and factory work.

ABH's mission is to improve the quality of life for farm workers, their families, and other lower-income residents by developing, managing, and marketing affordable housing as well as promoting fair housing.
