HISTORY

In 1975, the Allentown Housing Authority, a government entity, formed a subsidiary named Lehigh Housing Development Corporation (LHDC.) This enabled the Housing Authority to secure state, federal and local funds needed to develop private affordable housing. By the mid 1990’s, LHDC was operating as a consultant organization, rather than as a direct developer for the Housing Authority.

The organization was restructured in 1998 to focus on direct development and management of affordable housing and community development. To reflect its new direction, LHDC changed its name to Alliance for Building Communities (ABC.) Its mission is “to provide and promote innovative leadership in the development of affordable homes and viable communities where neighbors are willing to invest their money and spirit.”

Now, a decade later, ABC’s activities include developing and managing affordable rental housing for low-to-moderate-income families and seniors; connecting families with first-time homeownership opportunities; rehabilitating blighted multi-family properties back into the single-family homes they were meant to be when first constructed; developing community partnerships; and undertaking economic development projects.
